Manatee Historical Village

March 19th, 2010 was another day, and another field trip. This time we motored to the Manatee Historical Village in Bradenton which is about a hour and a half drive. It proved to be worthwhile journey. The restored village has 14 buildings that are always open with most furnished in period surroundings and no restrictions for photography. In addition, there is an adjacent old cemetery that dates to the 1800’s where a number of Civil War veterans are buried. One such noted is Genera Riggin, who was an aide to General U.S. Grant. The Stephens House is an excellent example of a “Cracker Gothic” style home built in 1912. It is well furnished and excellent for available light photography. A locomotive "Old Cabbage Head” was built in 1913 at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia and stands out in front of the park as a signature view. It is one of the premier restored villages as an educational site and for our purposes, photography. Nine of our photographers made the trip and as in the past, this will result in future trips as there is always another different photo that we can take. The consensus was that it was a great field trip and “We need to go there again”.  To round out the day, we also scouted out another possibility at the Palmetto Historical Park, a few miles North. However, it is not a large site but could be coupled with another site as a field trip.
